Shakespeare's World
“The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.”
– William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare was born around the 23rd of April 1564 in Stratford. His father was relatively successful as a local businessman and it is likely the family paid for Williams education, although there is no indication he ever attended university.
Shakespeare was 18 when he married an older woman called Anne Hathaway in 1582. Not long after their marriage they had their first daughter, Susanna. They had another two children but William’s only son Hamnet died aged only 11.

After his marriage Shakespeare’s life becomes a lot harder to follow but it seems he spent most of his time in London writing and performing in his plays. He was often away from his family for long periods of time and only returned home when all theaters were closed.
He wrote the majority of his sonnets and plays during the 1590’s. During this period his plays developed a good deal of interest and controversy. Most of Shakespeare's earlier plays were histories and comedies such as Richard II, Midsummer Nights Dream and Much Ado About Nothing but after 1600 he started writing more tragedies such as Hamlet and Othello.
